CLASSIC INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU 4 Days / 3 Nights
Day 1: Cusco - Km. 82 – Huayllabamba (11 km / 6 hours approx.) Transfer from the hotel to Km. 82 in which we meet our porters and get our equipment. We start our trek escorted by the porters going through semi-arid terrain along the Urubamba River with magnificent views of snow capped mountains, until we arrive to Llactapata. From here we leave the Urubamba valley and set off up the Kusichaca river to Huayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,842 ft), where we set up our first campsite.
Day 2: Huayllabamba – Pacaymayo (7 km / 6 -7 hours approx.) After a healthy breakfast we begin our walk up to the Warmihuañusca pass (4,200 m / 13,860 ft). Shortly afterwards, we arrive to the top of the pass. From here it is possible to see the other side which that leads to the Runkurakay ruins. At the end of the gorge, we stop at a place called Pacaymayo (3,600 m / 11,181 ft) where we set up our second campsite (Full meals).
Day 3: Pacaymayo – Wiñaywayna (10 km / 8 hours approx.) Starting in Pacaymayo we begin with a short ascent that will take us to the Runkurakay circular ruins. There are no signs of human life there, only great woods and abrupt hills. After resting a bit, we begin our descent. From this point on, you can clearly notice that the Inca Trail is very well preserved. We then arrive to the steps which will take us up to the Sayacmarca ruins (3,620 m / 11,946 ft). At Sayacmarca, the stone road takes us into the jungle continuing our trek toward the Phuyupatamarca ruins. The trail crosses the "Chaki Qocha" and for a brief moment we travel over a series of ups and downs. We then cross "The Tunnel", a natural cavity produced by a landslide which was adapted by the Incas. The well traced Inca Trail borders continuously hills full of moss and fern. After crossing a small pass, we will be able to see some steep steps under which the Ceremonial Center of the Phuyupatamarca ruins is (3,650 m / 12,045 ft). Going down the trail we have beautiful views of the Urubamba valley. This path continues down to the Wiñay Wayna ruins (2,650 m / 8,745 ft), the most important ruins after Machu Picchu and our last campsite.
Day 4: Wiñaywayna - Machu Picchu – Cusco (6km / 3hours approx.) We leave our campsite very early in the morning, at 5:00 a.m., heading towards Inti Punku (2,600 m / 9,042 ft). From here, Machu Picchu looks marvelously unreal. From our campsite to Machu Picchu, we walk approximately 3 hours. We visit the ruins the rest of the day. The train goes back to Cusco from the Aguas Calientes station (depend which’s train you booked ).
