ECONOMIC MANU TOUR PROGRAM 6 D/5N

1st day:

Leave Cuzco early in the morning approximately at 6:30 A.M. on our mini private bus. We go through the Andean mountains, making many stops at different places. Ninamarka is one of these places, we take a break here to appreciate pre-Inca chullpas [burial towers] and then we will arrive at the village of Paucartambo, which we will also visit.

Afternoon, we will have lunch in Acjanaco, that is the entrance to Manu National Park and resting place before leaving towards the cloudy or rainy forest. Here we will be able to appreciate a variety of plants: ferns, orchids, etc. This afternoon we will walk for an hour and a half through the foggy forest looking for birds such as the Cock of the Rocks, the Motmot, etc. After the stop we will continue descending to the town of Pillcopata where we will spend the night at a local lodge.

2nd day:

We leave the town of Pillcopata after breakfast heading for the port of Atalaya or Shintuya. On the way we will visit coca plantations that are grown by local families. When we arrive at the port of destination, our motorboat will be waiting so that after loading on our things we will navigate down the Alto Madre de Dios River.

From the boat it is possible to appreciate different types of birds such as herons, vultures, parrots, etc. We will have lunch in the hot waters of Shintuya where at the same time we can enjoy a natural cold or hot bath. Later, we will continue navigating towards the Amarakaeri Lodge. After settling in we will take a long walk in the afternoon and part of the night on our trails near the lodge in search of interesting insects, arachnids and others. We will have dinner at the lodge, and then we will spend the night at the lodge in comfortable beds with mosquito nettings.

3rd day:

This morning, after an early breakfast, we will leave towards our first campsite called Aguas Negras gully. As an average the walk takes 4 hours and is 7 kilometers long, approximately. During this long walk we will go through primary and secondary forests, having the opportunity to learn about medicinal and industrial trees its uses and commercialization. At the same time, we will have the opportunity to observe wild life. Arriving at the campsite, we will settle in comfortable tents equipped with camping mattresses under our tambo [shelter]. At night we will take a walk to our small collpa [observation post] to be able to observe mammals such as deer, capybara, etc. Our trail system offers different alternatives for walks, including a search for caymans, tarantula nests and other overwhelming nocturnal species. 4th day:

After a refreshing good night sleep, lulled by the sounds of the jungle, we leave early on another walk towards our next campsite on the Rio Blanco, where we will have the opportunity to fish for the famous piranha and other kinds of fish. We will return to campsite for lunch on the riverbanks. In the afternoon we will explore the area near the Rio Blanco, through the secondary and tertiary jungle that is the preferred habitat of the biggest rodent in the world, the capybara.

In addition to being an excellent area to observe the different species of monkeys, this night we will visit the mammal collpa [observation post] and with a little bit of luck we will have the opportunity to see animals such a the tapir, deer and others “collpeando”, which means eating the clay that is rich in salts and minerals. This night we will return to the campsite depending on the hour in which the activity ends at the collpa. Night in tents at our campsite.

5th day:

We leave the campsite early in the morning to return to the Amarakaeri Lodge. This morning the return walk is more direct, always observing and looking for other opportunities to see wild life along the way. We will arrive at out lodge at around noon where a nutritious lunch will be waiting for us. This afternoon it is optional to take the afternoon off. Those who wish to see some activity will take walks to places where they can appreciate different birds.

This night the dinner is usually outdoors where everyone can participate. Night at the Amarakaeri Lodge.

6th day:

Early in the morning we will take our motorboat and start sailing upstream to the native community of Shintuya or the port of Atalaya. Our land transportation will be waiting to take us back to Cuzco. We will be arriving in Cuzco early at night.
